How do data allowances and validity periods work for my esim?

Understand how your data package is allocated and how long it lasts for your GitSim eSIM.

When you purchase an eSIM from GitSim, it comes with a specific amount of data and a set duration for its use, known as the validity period. Here’s how these aspects work:

What are data allowances and validity periods?

Each GitSim eSIM plan includes:

  • Data Allowance: This is the total amount of mobile data (e.g., 1GB, 5GB, 10GB) you can use with your eSIM.
  • Validity Period: This is the length of time (e.g., 7 days, 15 days, 30 days) during which your data allowance is active and can be used.

When does the validity period start for my eSIM?

The validity period for your GitSim eSIM package begins the moment your eSIM successfully connects to a supported network in your destination. It does not start when you purchase or install the eSIM.

Tip: You can install your eSIM on your device before your trip. To make the most of your validity period, ensure your eSIM only connects to a network once you've arrived at your destination.

You can find information on network coverage in our list of supported countries and regions.

How is the data in my bundle allocated?

The data allowance in your bundle is a total amount available for the entire validity period. It is not distributed or capped on a daily basis.

For example:

  • If you buy an eSIM package with 5GB of data valid for 10 days, you have a total of 5GB to use at any point within those 10 days.
  • This means you could use 1GB on the first day, 0.5GB on the second, 2GB on the fifth, and so on, up to the 5GB total, as long as it's within the 10-day validity. It does not mean you get 0.5GB allocated per day.

Can I use all my data before the validity period ends?

Yes, you have the flexibility to use your data allowance as quickly as you need. If your usage is high, you might consume all your data before the validity period officially ends. Once the data is depleted, you will no longer be able to access data services with that bundle.

What if I run out of data or my validity period expires?

There are two scenarios:

  • You run out of data: If you use up your entire data allowance before the validity period is over, your data connection will stop. To continue using data, you will need to purchase a new data bundle for your eSIM.
  • The validity period expires: If the validity period ends (e.g., 7 days pass for a 7-day plan), the eSIM bundle expires. This happens even if you still have unused data. To regain connectivity, you would need to purchase a new data bundle.

Is it possible to extend my current bundle's validity period?

No, it is not possible to extend the validity period of an active data bundle. Once a bundle is purchased, its validity period is fixed. If you need data for a longer duration or if your current bundle is about to expire, you should purchase a new data bundle.
